Muhammad, the only surviving son of Firuz Shah Tugh-laq (1351-1388), was sought to be sidelined by a faction of the no-bles led by the wazir in 1380s. They pitted against him Tughlaq Shah, a great-grandson of the sultan. This led to a sharp struggle that led to Muhammad's emergence as the joint sultan in 1387. On Firuz Shah's death the following year, the slaves of the late sultan present in Delhi first brought Tughlaq Shah to the throne and then replaced him by Abu Bakr (1388-1390). Muhammad, supported by nobles stationed outside Delhi as well as by many local chiefs, continued to defy Abu Bakr and eventually succeeded in replacing him at Delhi. During Muhammad's short reign, local chiefs in the regions around Kanauj, Etawa, Delhi, and those of Punjab were effec-tively controlled. His death in January 1394, however, disrupted this process.
